I am a Pirate… and Other Aggregator News

Posted By admin on September 5, 2009

Yes, I am a pirate. Back in 2006 I met someone who played Puzzle Pirates and they recommended the game highly. I have never been one for online games – or even video games in general – but I decided to give it a go anyway. Years later I am still playing. I think that is because the social aspect of this game is key to its success.

It is odd to think of people one has not met face-to-face as “friends”, but they truly are. We strategize, have common goals, and just enjoy hanging out in game together. Any time of day or night you can log onto game and see people playing. I have made friends all over the world, as well as several who have become closer, phone buddies. It definitely is a different dynamic than I had ever experienced before. So, that is a brief background on why I added the Spyglass and the Cask O’ Blog to my Google Reader as part of an assignment for 501a.

I am not all about games. Since I have a broadcasting background and have worked at the NBC, CBS, and ABC affiliates in Connecticut, I also am interested in news and local media. I have added a couple that I enjoy reading often to my reader. The first is The Laurel. It is a nice outlet for local media gossip and news. I used to work with Meteorologist Geoff Fox at WTNH and will admit to still reading his blog.  He posts once a day and I will admit to learning a lot of techie stuff from his blog. He also takes great photographs and even sometimes offers some pointers.

I read Drudgereport almost everyday. It is bookmarked at work and at home and I just tend to gravitate there (as well as a couple local newspapers, google news, and yahoo news) when I have a few moments. I have added it to my reader just to give it a try. I am not sure I will keep it there or if I will miss the experience of going to the site.

As part of the aggregator assignment I added the recommended blogs right after class on Wednesday. I have since enjoy (and learned) a lot from the posts that have appeared in my reader. I know I would not have seen these posts any other way. However with my news sites, I only read stories in which the headline catches my eye. I am not sure if the RSS feeds will decrease my enjoyment or make it easier to see more articles that I may have missed otherwise. It will be an interesting experiment.

Just in the short time that I have been using Google Reader, I can say it is addictive. I can definitely say I plan to add more websites as I come across them. What a nice way to clean up bookmark clutter.

    hi laurie,
thanks for the company on our journey to blogging! I did indeed go ahead and sign up for google reader as well as aggregate some other sites. I completely agree that whatever headline grabs my attention is the one that I will read..your titles are pretty creative!
